Expert Q&A
Sugar substitutes: Splenda & Stevia
Tell me about Splenda and Stevia.
Splenda is better than Equal and NutraSweet (Aspartame), or Sweet'N Low (Saccharin), but it's still not a health food. Although I prefer it to other sweeteners, I suggest limiting your daily consumption. One example of a Splenda-sweetened beverage is Fruit-2-O.
Stevia is a plant-based sweetener that is considered to be more natural. Because it is extremely sweet, you only need to use a very small amount. You can find Stevia-flavored drinks in health food stores, but I haven’t seen them in regular grocery stores. You can also buy Stevia packets in health food stores.
